My grandfather is one of the well known priest in Kerala Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church . He is the president from past 20 years now . He owns his very own boy's orphanage it's named as" ST Mary's Boys Home" He teaches boys till High School . And provide them with a good future . Approximately 3000 kids passout with  every year. All my maternal side of the family are priests. So here are some beautiful pictures from my grandfather and Uncle's .

As a child I used to ask my grandfather that what is Oshana / Palm Sunday ? Why is Good Friday called Good Friday? What is Easter?

In English It's generally called Hosaaana but in Kerala  as per as the Malayalam  rule book i.e Bible it says  Oshana . So let's first learn the Hosaana or Oshana origin  which means "Please save us". It's a Greek word based on two Hebrew word  'yasha' wich means  save  and 'Ana ' which means please.

Hoshana is a lithurgical word in Judisam and Christianity. In Judisam it refers to a cry for a help . In Christianity it refers to cry of praise.

What is a palm Sunday?
On palm Sunday,  Christian churches often give  the  congregation plan branches to recreate the celebration of Christ's final arrival in Jerusalem because his for the Jewish holiday of Passover.
Jesus rode a young donkey into the Jerusalem and was greeted by a large crowd with palm branches and people shouting . "Hosaana to the son to David" , The people put their coats and palm branches on the ground as Jesus passed by.

This Appan and payasam is made during Hosaana feast  . As the Lord described Appam as his body and payasam as his blood . He gave to all the disciples as his blessings.

Why do we celebrate?

The observance of Palm Sunday in Jerusalem was witnessed by the pilgrims Egeria in about 381-384 . During the observance , there was a
Procession of people down the Mount of Olive. The people waved branches of palm or olive tress as they walked .   Generally in  Orthodox Church Traditions,
Plam Sunday is the continuation of the celebration of "Larazus" resurrection recorded in John 11.  Palm Sunday is one of the greatest feasts of the orthodox Church. It's called a movable feast day because the date changes every year in relation to Easter.

Why is Good Friday called Good Friday?

Good Friday commenrotes The Passion - the biblical story of crucification of Jesus Christ at Calvary - before his resurrection Easter Sunday.
Although the precise date of Christ's death is a source of much debate , biblical scholars tend to be in agreement that it cmae on a Friday on or near Passover , between 30-33 AD
According to the Bible , Jesus shared the last supper with his disciples on what is now marked as Maundy Thursday.  He was then betrayed by his followers Judas Iscariot , who revealed his location to Roman soliders in return for 30 pieces of silver.  The New Testament's four canonical Gospels of Mathew, Mark , Luke , and John all conclude with  a detailed account from Jesus's arrest to his eventual death . Christ first faces at trial with the Jewish judicial body of the Sanhedrin , before a futher hearing at the court of  Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor of Judaea.
This is how Jesus was crucified.

What is Easter ?
Easter is one of the principal holidays, or feasts, of Christianity. It marks the Resurrection of Jesus three days after his death by crucifixion. For many Christian churches, Easter is the joyful end to the Lenten season of fasting and penitence. The earliest recorded observance of Easter comes from the 2nd century, though it is likely that even the earliest Christians commemorated the Resurrection, which is an integral tenet of the faith.

Hope you get a short knowledge about the holy week ...
